Have you thought about retrofitting your home with solar panels? Not only are solar panels environmentally friendly, they can also offset your electrical bill. When you produce an excess of electricity, your meter runs backwards. This allows your utility to measure the amount of power you use from the electrical company minus the amount your solar panels generate. This can even sometimes result in an excess of power produced. Depending on your local utility rules, this can result in a payment to you. What other choice is as simple as getting clean, natural power from the sun?

The environmental impact of installing solar panels on your home can be substantial. Most power generated in the United States is still from the burning of fossil fuels. This has contributed to the collection of greenhouse gases and the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Solar panels are usually photovoltaic panels convert solar radiation directly into electrical power. Photovoltaic power production has reached the point where it is doubling every two years since 2002. This is an interesting fact to note considering the rate of technology has long been measured by something called "Moore's Law'.

Moore's Law states that the speed of processors in computers doubles every two years. While numerous people have stated that this cannot possibly continue, for over thirty years, it has. If solar panel installations and other implementation of alternative energy production increase at this same rate, the world will quickly become a better place. Less environmental pollution from burning coal and natural gas will result in a better air quality. Less fine particulate matter in the air will help children and adults with breathing problems.

While it might not seem that something as simple as installing solar photovoltaic panels on the roof of your home can make a long term positive difference, by providing a sustainable alternative to electricity generated by fossil fuels, you can. Recycling is a trend that has finally gone mainstream and made a huge difference in the amount of trash generated by cities. Individual efforts make recycling and other environmentally friendly programs work.

It is more than a passing fad to be friendly to the planet, it is a lifestyle choice that makes sense. If you install and produce solar power on the roof of your own home, it is a choice that can potentially help you make money as well. Make a choice that offers you the ability to control part of your life.
